My Reading Journey

Hi! My name is Fae. I created Fetch Phonics to use in my own classroom. I am passionate about teaching my students to read, so they feel confident and excited about reading. Simply said, I want them to have the exact opposite experience that I had learning to read.

As a child, I struggled to learn to read. I can remember hating reading in early elementary school. I felt stupid and hated school. I would often sit at the kitchen table and practice writing and rewriting my spelling word list on paper that was slightly damp with my own tears of frustration.

With patient parents, dedicated teachers, and a lot of motivation from books that I wanted desperately to be able to read, I struggled on. I spent many, many hours practicing by reading aloud to my sweet, childhood dog named Oreo. He was more patient than any adult. He listened to countless stories, read slowly and with many mistakes, as I grew as a reader. Hence, the inspiration for my curriculum's name, Fetch Phonics.

I see myself in every child who struggles with reading and that has been my motivation behind earning my masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction and my certification as a Reading Specialist. After this, and 7 years of teaching, I found that I was dissatisfied with most of the the resources for reading instruction that are out there today. So, I developed this curriculum to use in my own classroom.

Today, I live with my dog, Hazel, in Germany. I teach first grade at an international school and, when a pandemic isn't raging, I enjoy traveling and practicing dog agility with Hazel.
